Hotel Review: Staycation at Pendry San Diego

Last weekend I had the opportunity to stay at the Pendry San Diego, an LVX Collection property by Preferred Hotels & Resorts. As downtown San Diego’s latest hotel, the space is brand new but still has an air of an inviting and luxurious establishment. I was planning to explore the Gaslamp neighborhood of downtown San Diego, but to be honest once I arrived to the Pendry I didn’t want to leave- and I didn’t have to. Among the many restaurants, bars, lounge areas, pool, fitness area, and spa, I couldn’t think of a place more inviting than the Pendry.

Though the thoughtfully and well-designed spaces are enough to make you want to stay forever, what was most memorable was the outstanding service and hospitality I experienced as a guest of the hotel. Each staff member I encountered from the moment I pulled up to valet throughout my entire stay was exceptional in their demeanor and handling of every situation.

When you arrive to the check in desk, you will notice a beautiful little cart complete with flowers and glass drink dispensers, and Jacob at Reception let me know that if you fill up your cup and give the bartender at Fifth & Rose (the bar in the Pendry lobby) a special code word that the front desk tells you, you can get your welcome drink spiked for free!

Jacob then ensured I got the best Grand Room on a corner on the 10th floor, complete with a kitchenette, living room sitting area, ultra luxurious bed, spacious bathroom with tub and shower and separate toilet area, and a beautiful view of downtown San Diego.

The staff caught wind that my boyfriend and I were celebrating a special romantic weekend, and as soon as I settled in to the room I got a call from Monica at In-Room Dining asking if I preferred red or white wine. I had to tell her that unfortunately I don’t drink wine but to my surprise she arrived to my room a few minutes later and had brought up a tray of chocolates and macarons and a “Make your own Margarita” kit with a bottle of tequila. I was so blown away by the thoughtfulness and the attention to detail that I knew I was going to enjoy my stay the rest of the weekend.

And I was right, everything was perfect. We had room service deliver breakfast on the first morning, and that night we met friends downstairs for drinks at Lionfish, and enjoyed a “Hot in Jalisco” cocktail – definitely recommended if you like spicy tequila drinks. We then stopped by Oxford, the nightclub that is on the same property as Pendry. It’s a busy spot so I’ve heard it can be a long wait to get in and that they charge cover but if you are a hotel guest simply give them your room key and you will be taken care of right away. The following morning we had breakfast at Provisional- The space is absolutely beautiful with two-story tall vaulted ceilings with gorgeous lighting, chandeliers, and overall design. The food was fantastic and we went with our server Alex’s recommendations: The cracked Nutella roll, Avocado toast, a make your own omelette, and we were also treated to complimentary mimosas.

We then spent the later part of the day laying at the hotel’s pool (80 degree winters in San Diego!) and shared a burger and fries poolside. The pool receives great sunlight as the neighboring buildings are not tall. Next to the pool is a nicely sized gym with all brand-new equipment and plenty of room to do various types of exercises. I also took a peek in the Spa next to the pool and gym and the space was immediately calming and relaxing and makes you forget you are in the most lively neighborhood of all of downtown San Diego.

Staying at Pendry San Diego is a 5 star experience and I would recommend to anyone visiting Southern California and looking for a luxe, comfortable, and beautiful place to stay in the middle of all the action in downtown San Diego.
